Five Feet Apart – by Mikki Daughtry, Rachael Lippincott and Tobias Iaconis

FIVE FEET APART is a wonderful Young Adult Book. I’m far from a “young adult” and I really enjoyed it. I listed to it as an Audio Book, borrowed from my local Public Library. As a Mom, I do have to say that I was bothered a bit by Stella’s parents in this book! I felt like they were kind of out of touch during the hospital stay, even though Stella had numerous hospital visits, I think as a Mom, I’d be a bit more hands on than Stella’s parents were. Even though I feel this way, I would still give it 4.5 stars and I can’t wait to see the movie!–Janell

What would it be like to be young and have spent most of your life in and out of hospitals? This book centers around 3 teens whose lives have been just that. Because of their medical conditions, they long for a life that is more like their friends lives. To be carefree…and living their lives in the way their friends can. Having fun, being carefree,.

Stella is the main character. She has Cystic Fibrosis, all of her friends are leaving in their Senior trip to Cabo and she is back in the hospital. Her parents have just separated, and she misses her sister more than anything in the world. She is trying to be brave, like her sister would have wanted, while she hopes for a lung transplant. Stella is organized, has a life plan and knows her regimen. She’s developing an app to help others with medical conditions and has her life planned out. All she needs is new lungs, to be able to live the life she has planned.

Poe is Stella’s best friend. They have been in and out of the hospital together since they were young kids. They know each other better than anyone else knows them. Poe is alone-his family was deported and he is in the hospital fighting, by himself. He and Stella have milkshake parties and know all the hospital shortcuts. They’ve learned the hospital staff schedules and know who will let them have fun and who won’t!

There’s someone new in the hospital this time-and he has caught Stella’s eye. Will is handsome, a rule breaker (totally the opposite of Stella!) and they fall in love.

Imagine young love…being a teenager..but you cannot hold hands, no hugs, definitely no kissing. When people have CF (Cystic Fibrosis) due to medical reasons, they must stay 6 feet apart. Stella has never been closer to anyone emotionally, and the distance makes it even harder. In the case of Will, medically it is even more dangerous, as he has a condition that could be deadly to Stella.

They continue to fall in love, breaking the rules and being 5 feet apart, instead of 6. They worry about getting caught, but have dates in the hospital and fall more and more in love.

Will struggles with his relationship with his Mom, He feels like she has controlled all of his medical decisions for years and he can’t wait to be 18 and make his own decisions. With Poe’s help, Stella assembles a surprise party for him. They are all so happy with their friends and it is wonderful for them to all feel like normal teens for a while. The party ends abruptly and Stella, Will and Poe are worried about the repercussions. No one could have anticipated the tragedy that follows.

Will would give anything to comfort Stella, and hates this illness more than ever. She needs him and he cannot help her! Will and Stella decide to take a chance and leave the hospital for an adventure that nearly costs them both their lives.

This book has been made into a movie and is now in theaters!
